To refrain from speech
Ever say something you wish you could take back? The easy solution: don’t say it in the first place. An ill-considered word lives forever.
Silence protects you from yourself; it makes you look more mature and intelligent; and people will listen more closely to the few words you do speak. It benefits those around you as well. Leaving harsh words and gossip unspoken spares others gratuitous pain.
