Ability and readiness to take action independently, without suggestion from others
Running my veterinary specialty hospital, I insisted that my team make decisions in my absence. If the outcome was suboptimal, they knew there would be no anger, no repercussions – just constructive suggestions for next time. I applauded initiative.
Initiative is an obvious choice. Lack of it consigns you to forever being a follower. Proof of it makes you a candidate for greater opportunities. Who’s going to get that promotion: one who led or all who followed? Who’s going to start that business? Or that foundation? In life and in work, initiative pays off.
Initiative is to success what a lighted match is to a candle. (Orlando Aloysius Battista)
