restraint under provocation or when a debt or obligation is owed to you

I’m not talking about the 15 bucks Pat borrowed from you for lunch. I’m talking about the obligations everyone owes you: civility, trustworthiness, justice, forgiveness – everything that fits the “do unto others as you would have done to you”

mindset.  When others fail to meet these obligations… should you choose forbearance?

Forbearance often gets a bad rap. Some contend that every angry word should be answered in kind, every minor transgression relentlessly avenged, every slight reciprocated… and that anything less is cowardice.

I disagree. I think going the extra mile is a sign of strength and self-confidence.  The extra mile, but no further:

There is, however, a limit at which forbearance ceases to be a virtue. (Edmund Burke)

If so, why choose forbearance at all?
