a state of enjoyment and satisfaction with what you already have

“What you already have” is the key. Remember:

Who is not contented with what they have, will not be contented with what they would like to have. (Socrates)

As I write these lines, I gaze around my home office. Family photos, artworks covering the walls, a multitude of travel souvenirs on shelves and mantelpiece: how could I not be content with all that life has given me?

Some argue that contentment bespeaks a lack of ambition. I disagree. Contentment is satisfaction with the road behind, and where it has brought you; ambition looks to the road ahead.
